Officially Sunsetting Spectasia

In a previous post, I mentioned that the development of Spectasia, a macOS image manager, was on hold. While pondering the project’s direction, I discovered an open-source project that perfectly implements the features and philosophy I envisioned. Consequently, I have decided to officially sunset the Spectasia project.
The project is an offline-first local photo management app called Lap (julyx10/lap).
Introducing Lap
Lap is an open-source photo manager built for browsing family albums and organizing large local media libraries. It completely aligns with my original direction (Local Photo Manager, No forced Cloud, Fast and powerful desktop experience).
- Offline-first Local Environment: It scans and displays local folders or hard drives directly without pushing you towards cloud uploads. Perfect for those who prioritize the privacy of their photos.
- Powerful Tech Stack: Built with Tauri, Rust, and Vue. It is fast, lightweight, and supports cross-platform.
- Folder-first Approach: You can work directly with your existing folder hierarchy, and it intelligently syncs file changes.
- Comprehensive Format Support: Smoothly handles common image formats as well as over 20 different camera RAW formats using built-in decoding.
It Worked Out Perfectly
Finding this project felt like someone had read the blueprint in my head and turned it into code. Since a tremendous open-source application already exists and is actively developed, I realized there is no practical reason for me to spend significant time overlapping that effort.
Instead, I will pour all my energy into other high-priority matters, and for all my photo management needs, I will happily use Lap.
If you are interested in an offline, folder-first method to manage extensive photo libraries, I highly recommend checking out Lap. Although the UI could use some more polishing.
While the Spectasia portfolio page has now been cleanly removed from my site, I’m glad I can now focus on what’s more important.
